Two-week Sustainable Living & Natural Building Workshop

Come & join the people of the Panya Project for a two week introduction to sustainable living & natural building. See & learn about a range of construction styles using natural materials, while being immersed in a permaculture eco-village in Northern Thailand.

December 5 - 19, 2010

We will explore many ways we can create strong, beautiful, efficient, affordable, & artistically expressive spaces too live, work & play. Using locally sourced, commonly found & recycled resources.

Techniques will including wattle & cob, adobe blocks, cob & the process used too build using these mediums. We will also learn about finish plasters including clay, lime and natural paints and many different decorative techniques. We will be putting the final, creative coats on our new dormitories so this work will be fun, creative & rewarding with plenty of opportunity for artistic expression!

There will also be an opportunity to get hands-on sessions in the garden, getting to know how our food is grown, soil and compost building.

The workshop will involve plenty of practical work. Our aim is that participants will leave motivated & with plenty of experience.

Inspire & be inspired, while getting a taste of community living at a well established Permaculture project in Norther Thailand. Merge with our community, learn, share & celebrate life with us.

PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE

March 5 - 21, 2010

With Christian Shearer, Geoffroy Godeau, and the people of the Panya Project, Chiang Mai, Thailand

This full 72-hour certified Permaculture Design Course will be held at the site of the Panya Project, about 60 km north of Chiang Mai.

The course will consist of a broad range of topics applicable to life anywhere on this planet, yet will be tailored to the needs of the students present as well as the location at hand. Participants will help to co-create the design of tropical food forests, permaculture-style gardens, natural buildings, water catchment and irrigation systems, work with swales and dams, as well as take part in permaculture activities on the hosting land.

The course will be conducted in the internationally accepted manner. The 72 hours of course work required to receive a Permaculture Design Certificate, will be covered over a two week period, mixing hands-on with plenty of in classroom studies. All students are required to be present for the full two weeks if they wish to receive the certificate.

Permaculture courses are fairly standardized as far as content. We will cover every major topic in Bill Mollisons: Permaculture: a Designers Manual. So quickly what that includes is the following:

1. Philosophies and Ethics underlying permaculture.

2. Basic permaculture principals and help shape things in general

3. Patterns in Nature, and how to use that in design

4. Methods of design. How to go from a damaged piece of land to having and idea for how to move forward with it.

5. Climactic factors. We will cover all the major climates and how to work with them.

6. Trees, forests, and why we want to mimic their systems.

7. Water: catchment, usage, importance, and conservation

8. Soil, minerals, microorganisms, building new soil, and preventing erosion

9. Earthworks: How to shape the land to help it acheive the goals we are aiming for.

10. Aquaculture

11. Natural Building

12. Alternative systems: community living, and other ways of choosing to live differently that works well for people and the planet.

Each of these categories has subcategories and each teacher also has their own additions and certain topics that are stressed over others.

The Panya Project was set up to provide an active example of sustainable living in northern Thailand. The project is still in its infancy, but in November, 2006, it hosted a PDC workshop taught by Geoff Lawton which culminated in the construction of a 2 million litre dam and three swales.

The course will be taught by three active permaculture enthusiasts. Christian Shearer, one of the founders of the Panya Project, Geoffroy Goddeau, a Belgian landscape architect and natural builder, and Greg Crawford, an American permaculturalist with years of experience in production gardens and natural building. Their combined knowledge gives a great scope, with each having strengths in their own areas. All are passionate and enlivening.

We would like to continue our policy of offering this course at a lower price than other places in the world, in hopes that this course may be attended by folks who ordinarily wouldn't be able to afford to come. We are also going to continue to offer an extremely low fee for people working with NGO's. We appreciate what you do, and this is just one way me might thank you. We are looking forward to expanding our own knowledge and depth of permaculture, creating an amazing example of it ourselves, and sharing the bounty with the global sustainability community and beyond!

(It may appear that we have raised our prices, but that Thai Baht price for the course is staying exactly the same. The change in US$ price only reflects the fact that the dollar is dropping in value, and thus we have to accept more of it for equal value.)

Originally from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, Christian Shearer helped found the Panya Project. He has over five years of permaculture experience, working and living at Lost Valley Education Center outside of Eugene, Oregon, and has been contributing to the Panya Project for over. He is a natural builder, a food forest enthusiast, a musician, a certified educator and has extensive knowledge of tropical permaculture systems. He has taught permaculture in Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and the United States and is excited to continue sharing with and learning from all involved!

Geoffroy Godeau is from Belgium where he graduated in landscape architecture. He discovered permaculture in Nicaragua, while traveling the world. He has been living on and off at the Panya Project for the last three years, learning and teaching mainly about natural building. He has been working and teaching on natural building projects in Belgium as well, and investigating and practicing permaculture techniques in landscaping projects. The course will be offered in partnership with the Panya project, a permaculture and natural building education center in Northern Thailand. With over five years of tropical permaculture experience and his passion for the subject matter, he brings the course to life. This is his second time teaching a PDC in Taiwan.

Christian Shearer Originally from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, Christian Shearer is the founder and Managing Director of the Panya Project. He has over six years of permaculture experience, working and living at Lost Valley Education Center outside of Eugene, Oregon, and now residing at the Panya Project in northern Thailand for over five years. He is a permaculture consultant, with Broadacre International, a natural builder, a food forest enthusiast, a musician, a certified educator and has extensive knowledge of tropical permaculture systems. He has taught twelve PDC courses, in four countries and is excited to continue sharing his passion for a better world and learning from all involved!

Chiu Yie-Ru (Jiivandeva) is the Asis. Professor in Tzu Chi University with his Ph.D. in water resources and environmental engineering. He is also the president of Progressive Utilization Association promoting the local economy development and economic democracy. He is teaching Permacuture in the university and also engaged in several Permaculture related project, e.g. Permauculture study circle in Taipei, Master Unit Project of Ananda Marga in Tainan, Green Sanatorium Project in Hualian, Permaculture Village Project in Hualian.

Tarng, Yan-Hann (Yaman) is the president of Taiwan Permaculture Sustainable Development Association and giving PDC. He is also the founder of Yaman Garden Project. He has been engaged in several Permaculture related projects, e.g. Growing Your Own Rice project, community empowerment project in Tauyuan, low-carbon project in GoungLiow, working holiday project in Hualian.

Cost

The cost for the course includes three vegetarian meals per day and full accommodation for the fifteen nights of the course. The accommodation consists of 5 dormitories with sleeping mats, pillow and bed sheet provided. All guests will have free wifi access (fast enough for emails etc.). Transportation to and from Yujing (local town) is also included, if needed.

For Malaysians & citizens of developing countries, the course fee is a sliding scale between MYR 2000 – MYR 3000 (Equivalent to about USD 600 – USD 900 )

For International Students from developed countries, the course fee is a sliding scale between MYR 2500 – MYR 3000 (Equivalent to about USD 700 – USD 900)

We would like to make the course more affordable and accessible to the people of this region, and to others who would not normally be able to afford a PDC elsewhere in the world. As such, each participant is given some leeway to determine their contribution towards the running of the course.The minimum contribution being MYR 2,000 (from developing countries)or MYR 2,500 (from developed countries). Two scholarship seats have been allocated for 2 deserving candidates . Generous contributions within the sliding scale will go to the sponsorship of the scholarship seats.

Course fee includes all meals and dormitory living arrangement for the duration of the course. Campsites are available upon request.
