Introduction to Permaculture July 22 – 29 [FULL]

This 8 day course will cover the basics of Permaculture and how they relate to sustainable holistic living.   Participants will walk away with a basic understanding of how to use permaculture design, as well as practical experience in a wide variety of hands on skills.  This course is aimed at those wishing to learn more about permaculture in a fun, interactive way.

Theory Sessions:  Our aim is for participants to leave inspired and confident, with good knowledge of how to apply permaculture design and pattern recognition.  In order to deepen our knowledge we will have theory sessions each morning before getting to work on our projects.  These include: permaculture ethics and principles, design methodology, forest gardening theory, the soil food web, organic gardening and other interesting topics.

Natural Building: Ready to get dirty? We will get in the mud and learn how to make earthen adobe bricks, which will be used in the construction of our new sala.  Additionally we will make and apply a final plaster to one of our many adobe homes.  Enjoy the beauty and simplicity of working with natural materials!

Composting:   Explore how to build better soil, and about the soil organisms that make up the soil food web.  Participants will learn about Berkley 18 day composting, a rapid method capable of turning weeds, manure, and kitchen waste into beautiful humus (soil) in less than three weeks.  In addition, composting techniques such as worm composting, long term compost piles, compost teas, and other natural fertilisers will be covered.

Organic Gardening: Through both theory and practical session we will look at how to grow strong healthy plants without the use of petro-chemicals.  Together we will create an instant no dig garden and plant it with seeds of our choosing.  In addition topics such as direct seeding, transplanting, crop rotation, companion planting, and seed saving will be covered.

Appropriate technology: Discover different applications of appropriate technology. Learn about rocket stoves, passive solar heating, biogas and much more. We will explore one specific example of appropriate technology in depth and eventually realise and use it.

Community Living:  Our goal is to offer a rounded experience that integrates the elements that build successful communities into everything we do.  Participants will gain experience in community living as they join the Panya intentional community in its daily tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, playing music and having fun.

The Site:  The Panya Project Permaculture and Sustainability Centre offers an optimal and inspiring environment to truly experience living in intentional community, exploring an alternative way of life and reconnecting to a natural state of being. Comfortable accommodation in dormitories or single/double rooms as well as fresh, vegetarian food will be provided throughout the course.  Special dietary needs can be accommodated.  Please read our website (Panyaproject.org) for detail about our facilities.

This workshop will equip participants with the right inspiration and tools to become a force for positive change in this world.
